Appeal in de Grood case going to Supreme Court of Canada says lawyer

EDMONTON – A lawyer for a man who fatally stabbed five young people at a Calgary house party in 2014 wants the Supreme Court of Canada to hear his appeal.

Matthew de Grood was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Kaiti Perras, Josh Hunter and Lawrence Hong.

De Grood was found to be living with undiagnosed schizophrenia at the time.

He’s been seeking more freedoms while he’s under psychiatric care.

His lawyer, Jacqueline Petrie, had asked the Alberta Court of Appeal to grant de Grood an absolute or conditional discharge.

The Alberta court rejected that application earlier this year.

Petrie says an application has been filed for the country’s top court to hear the case.
