Naturalization, soccer dome, Coordinated Care Campus, and climbing wall among Monday’s city council meeting topics

Oct 14, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Items related to naturalization and possible locations for a soccer dome and a climbing wall all were discussed at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Naturalization (corrected from an earlier version)

A city committee is recommending making some changes to the naturalization program.

Those include restoring pre-naturalization mowing rotations to spots next to residential properties that were part of the Boulevard Naturalization Pilot Program.

Three areas had been included.

Residents had complained of a higher fire danger and more noxious weeds, among other things, because of this idea.

The changes would also see the area south of 84 Avenue go back to a pre-pilot program mowing schedule.

Soccer Dome

Three locations for a possible soccer dome near the old Leisure Centre and Comp. High School will go before council.

One possible location is north of the pickleball courts.

The other two would be south of the pickleball courts, with one proposal seeing the dome go east and west, the other north and south.

These three were picked from five possibilities brought forward by city administration.

The other two would have seen the dome go up east of 105 Street.

Coordinated Care Campus

Council will also look at spending $780,000 to replace the roof of the Coordinated Care Campus, the permanent supportive housing facility located in the former Stonebridge Hotel.

The money would come from a reserve fund if the request is approved.

The City says a building assessment done in 2021 showed that the part of the roof above what were the hotel rooms would have to be replaced within two to five years and doing it now will mean tenants can move into the renovated building without any more interruptions.

This would be done as part of Phase 3 of renovations that are currently underway. It involves 43 units on the top floor plus what will become municipal space.

The first two phases, which included 63 rooms, were finished earlier this year.

In July, the total cost of the project was $23,449,405.50.

Climbing Wall

A City committee is recommending that the Activity and Reception Centre be picked as the location for a new climbing wall.

The proposal calls for it to go up in the northwest corner of the building.

A spot at the Eastlink Centre was also considered.

The Grande Prairie Climbing Association has been talking with the City about putting money, instruction, and programming into this proposal.
