ASIRT investigating RCMP-involved shooting in Grande Prairie

Oct 16, 2023 | 6:43 AM

Alberta’s police watchdog has been directed to investigate an officer involved shooting, which resulted in the death of a male on Sunday evening in Grande Prairie.

RCMP were dispatched to a residence in the Hillside neighbourhood (104 Avenue and 92A Street) for a disturbance at a residence and were confronted by a male with a firearm upon their arrival.

An altercation ensued between Mounties and the armed male. Shots were fired and the male was struck.

The male was immediately tended to with first aid and EMS was called. He was taken to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the actions of police during their investigation.

RCMP will also be doing an internal review, independent of ASIRT’s, to gather full account of what took place during the incident. Training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status, are all subject to review.
