Five new medical specialists have come to Grande Prairie since mid-September says Mayor Clayton

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says she has had word that five new physicians have come to Grande Prairie since mid-September.

A urologist, a family medicine/emergency doctor, an anaesthesiologist, an orthopedic surgeon and an emergency department physician are included in the group.

“I think every time we hear about a new specialist moving to our community, it’s something that we need to be happy (about) and be proud of,”

“When I have the opportunity to meet doctors who are considering moving to Grande Prairie there are things that we point out that they’re very interested in that make them choose Grande Prairie over other communities.”

Clayton says that can include access to recreation and culture, the fact Grande Prairie is a young community, has various amenities to offer, being able to get somewhere in a few minutes, access to recreation, and a chance to work at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

She adds there is still a need for family doctors.

“And I know that the work through recruitment and attraction in ourselves and many other organizations we will continue to work on that path, but I think we’re headed in the right direction in regard to specialists.”

Clayton says it is never a hard sell to try to convince people to relocate to Grande Prairie.

“I know many people that move here for five years and never leave and that seems to be a theme that happens quite often.”

“It’s more about what they’re looking for in their career. Whether they’re a young family doctor or whether they’re looking to educate up-and-coming residents, there are many offerings that our facility and our region provides to doctors.”

Clayton says it is a priority for council to not only attract people but to support them once they get here and to make sure they are comfortable living here.
