Storm add veteran WHL goalie to the roster

Oct 23, 2023 | 4:11 PM

The Grande Prairie Storm have added a goalie from the Western Hockey League.

Nicholas Jones is a 6’1 Calgary product who earned his fair share of accolades during a standout 2021-2022 in the U18 Alberta Elite Hockey League. He took home Top Goaltender, Playoff MVP, a first-team all-star placement, and the League Championship.

That success led Jones to the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL, before signing with the Storm.

Storm GM Mike Bomersback talked about Jones signing in a release from the team.

“When it was first brought up to the staff that he might be available, we didn’t hesitate and jumped all over it as quickly as we could. Myself as well as the rest of the staff are very familiar with him in seeing him over the years play minor hockey in Calgary and throughout Alberta.”

Bomersback added, “He’s not only good at keeping pucks out of the net, but he’s a great character kid that teammates want to play with,” and “It will also take some pressure off both our young goaltenders in Austin Dubinsky and Angelo Zol, who have been great so far.”

The Storm will be back in action at home Tuesday (October 24) when they play the Whitecourt Wolverines at 7 p.m.

The Storm recorded a pair of lopsided wins over the weekend, both at home.

Grande Prairie beat Olds 7-3 Saturday after stopping Canmore 6-1 on Friday and now have a record of 7-5-1 on the season.

Tomis Marinkovic had a hat trick against Canmore and Alex Atwill had three goals versus Olds.

Combined attendance for the two games was 3559.
