Mid-sized Cities Mayor Caucus calling for liason with Provincial Government

Oct 26, 2023 | 12:55 PM

The Mayor of Grande Prairie attended a meeting of mid-sized Alberta city mayors earlier this month.

The Mid-sized Cities Mayors Caucus held its Fall 2023 meeting in Leduc to reaffirm priorities and share ideas and resources.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says the meeting was very productive.

“We had Dan William, Minister of Health and Addictions, we also had an hour with the Premier,” Clayton says. “It was a really good conversation for a check on our advocacy priorities and the gear up for the Fall session with the Provincial Government. So, that we’re all aligned in regards to where our advocacy priorities are, and what the needs are specifically for mid-sized cities.

At the meeting, the MCMC asked Premier Danielle Smith to add a dedicated liaison for mid-sized cities into her government that would allow mid-sized city voices to weigh in on provincial decisions affecting municipalities.

“Have direct input on infrastructure issues, healthcare issues, priorities that all mid-sized cities face such as electrical distribution disparities,” she says. “Really have that conduit to the government creates a quick process for discussion.”

Clayton says Smith was receptive of the idea and would take them to the fall session of the legislature.

“We’re quite positive we will see the Premier in the next few weeks. We’re hoping to hear, when the fall session starts, what the relationship with mid-sized cities will look like with the Province. It’s already off to a great start with this current government, but we know that it can continue to be better with more communications. We’re very positive about what the outcome will be.”

The meeting also gave caucus members the chance to expand their executive leadership team, of which Mayor Clayton is a member.
