Alberta throne speech kicks-off new legislative session

Oct 30, 2023 | 5:29 PM

Alberta’s speech from the throne includes a promise to put any potential tax increases up to a referendum.

And it includes more threats to unsheathe a sovereignty law meant to defend against what the United Conservative government deems federal overreach.

The speech kicking off the new legislative session is meant to give a broad outline of the government’s goals and priorities.

It’s the first since Premier Danielle Smith won the May election.

The government is also planning to extend a break on fuel taxes until the end of the year, and to reform the province’s electricity market.

The speech did not mention the government’s proposed withdrawal from the Canada Pension Plan.

Smith says a promised referendum on the issue may not materialize if public consultation suggests the idea isn’t popular.

The Opposition New Democrats released their alternative throne speech, calling for the government to address bread-and-butter issues such as high auto insurance, high electricity costs, soaring tuition and a lack of housing.
