Restructuring of AHS must be done “responsibly and carefully” says AMA president

The president of the Alberta Medical Association says the restructuring of the healthcare system needs to be approached “responsibly and carefully.”

The call from Dr. Paul Parks is contained in a letter to members.

He says this approach must be taken so that it doesn’t lead to even longer wait times and less access.

Dr. Parks goes on to say that he told the government that physicians and other healthcare workers must be involved in any system re-design.

In a letter to association members, Dr. Parks says he has told the government it is vital that physicians are involved, adding system is already in a fragile state.

He also says physicians have questions like now doctors would be paid if they work in more than one of the four new divisions, whether will they be allowed to practice in more than one and what the most effective representation for physicians would be.
