Senate rejects amendment to Bill C-234

The Senate has voted to reject an amendment to Bill C-234, an Act to Amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act.

The amendment would have seen the removal of farm buildings from the bill and only allowed a carbon tax exemption for grain dryers.

The bill, with exemptions for both grain dryers and buildings like barns and greenhouses, will now go to third reading in the Senate.

The Grain Growers of Canada has issued a news release commending the Senate for the decision.

Executive director Kyle Larkin says in a release that allowing the change to go ahead would have “denied financial relief to thousands of producers.
