Local comic book creators to share their work at GPop!

Nov 21, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Local and international comic book creators will be included at the second GPop!, an event billed as “Grande Prairie’s community-level pop culture market fair.”

It will take place Friday and Saturday at D-Coy Armouries.

GPop! creator Blaine Burke says the local talent includes science fiction writers, along with comic book designers and creators.

“We did this just in April at the Elks Hall. It was a small show. We just had vendors and we just had some artists that sort of reached out to us. We took on a bigger venue and word started to get around.”

“There is a real market for the B-Tier event and what I mean by the B-Tier event is more of a grassroots event and showcasing what some of the local talent is.”

Burke says it is amazing to see local people do something like make their own comic book.

“To write a comic book from start to finish and have it published and printed is a big feat and for some people, it’s years of work. We’ve got some of those folks here.”

Science fiction book author Dustin Archibald, comic creator Mike Moman, and comic artist, writer and creator Joshua Soren will all be featured at the event.

Burke says Moman will be launching his first-ever book called Oldsmobiles With Laser Guns.

Archibald wrote the Asha Anderson Saga book series.

Soren is the author of the comic The Spectacular Shenanigans of Mr. P’Choka and Earl and is also a board game designer.

Burke says years of collecting made him want to put together an event like this.

“I had gone to a market on my own and I was selling some of my comic books. I was looking around, it was a toy show that I was at and just when I looked around, I felt there were things missing.”

“I thought that I could put (on) an event and I could include the pop culture community and make it inclusive.”

Hours will be 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5.
