Two new categories this year

Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards now accepting nominations

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection is encouraging people to nominate deserving residents for the Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards.

This year’s edition will feature two new categories; The Junior Official of the Year award, and the Award of Sport Excellence.

The Junior Official of the Year award will be presented to a local young official to recognize significant contributions to the growth and development of their sport.

The Award of Sport Excellence will be given to an athlete, team or coach who had outstanding performances in their sport throughout 2023.

In a release, Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection executive director Karna Germshied said these awards were added to “underscore our commitment to recognizing excellence,” and she encourages all residents to participate in celebrating these individuals and teams.

In total, eleven different awards are open for nominations:

• Female and Male Athlete of the Year
• Junior Female and Male Athlete of the Year
• Team of the Year
• Coach of the Year
• Developmental Coach of the Year
• Outstanding Official
• Junior Official of the Year
• Sport Builder
• Unsung Hero
• Spirit of Sport Award (Formerly the Community Sportsmanship Award)
• Sport Event of the Year Award
• Award of Sport Excellence (ASE)

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection has also provided a list of tips for residents wanting to nominate someone.

The organization suggests understanding the award category, following the guidelines of the submission form, concisely answering each question, and including letters of support.

Nominations close for the Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards on January 31.
