The 24th edition of the Peace Country Beef Congress set for Friday, Saturday at Evergreen Park

Jan 5, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Friday, January 5 is Day 1 of the 24th Peace Country Beef Congress.

It is taking place at Evergreen Park.

President Colby Klassen says interest in the show this year is “really strong.”

“We had a lot of interest (in) junior events and the junior clinics, so that’s a real positive sign for interest from young cattle enthusiasts.”

“Even on the purebred side of things, it looks like we’ll have increased numbers for the show this year.”

Klassen says there are people coming from outside of the Peace region.

“There (are) cattle coming from as far as Quesnel, B.C. There is also another group coming from Elk Point, Alberta, so it’s a wide variety of cattle, but the majority will be from the Peace Country.”

A junior showmanship and judging clinic starts Friday at 9 a.m. The trade show opens at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Klassen says it will include close to a dozen vendors that sell things like machinery and feed.

Day 1 will also include clinics and cattle shows. Alberta Beef Producers will host one of its Producer Engagement Sessions Friday night.

Klassen tells us how that came to be added for this year.

“They reached out to us and asked if that would be something we would be interested in doing if they held a supper and then allowed them to do this Q&A type of deal.”

“I think that’s going to work out really well, just to let people travel in and it’s not just for the Engagement Session, also, they can take in the show and view cattle as well.”

The congress happens at a time when those who run purebred operations have cows calving.

Klassen says it can be tough to be involved in both.

“Most of us there are lucky that we have somebody else at home, (a) family member that can take care of things. For myself, my Dad stays home and keeps the calving and feeding under control.”

“It definitely is one thing that makes it a little tougher for producers, just with the timing of the show and everything like that.”

Klassen says the weather has been good for calving.

“The weather has been unreal this year and it definitely helps. It’s going to cool off a little here by the sounds of it, but still, it’s quite nice for calving and should help people to be able to sneak away.”

“Typically, we’re used to having pretty cold Beef Congresses. We’re used to it”

The cattle shows start again Saturday at 10 a.m.
