Usage up at the Grande Prairie Food Bank, Community Kitchen in 2023

Jan 8, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The number of people using Grande Prairie’s Salvation Army Food Bank continues to grow.

Captain Peter Kim says a lot of new households used the food bank in 2023.

“(There were) 1,464 new households, which totals over 5,800 households that used the food bank. That actually equals a total number of 12,760 individuals who accessed the food bank.”

Kim says the number of meals served at the Community Kitchen went from 89,000 to over 100,000.

He is hoping this trend reverses in 2024.

“I hope that inflation and the (rates for) utilities and gas, and, especially, food costs goes down. We cannot continue to sustain this level of need.”

“We’re grateful that the community has been able to step up, but for how long? We can’t continue in this number, this continued growth.”

Kim is hopeful things have levelled off.

“We went up exponentially over the past three years because of COVID and inflation, but now we’re holding pretty high up there (with) 12,700 individuals (using the food bank).”

“I see maybe a plateauing. Hopefully, it will drop soon.”

Kim says they are always grateful when the community comes together to support the Salvation Army.
