“Good uptake in specialized physicians” in Grande Prairie says Mayor Clayton

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says the city has been “very fortunate recently” when it comes to attracting doctors.

“AHS has been quite aggressive in their attraction of new physicians and so, on a regular basis, we like to support AHS and their initiatives and, in turn, take on some of our own initiatives (in) not only attracting but retaining existing physicians and health care specialists.”

Clayton told council at their most recent meeting that a new doctor to oversee emergency, and with a background in addiction treatment has agreed to come Grande Prairie.

She says the City is happy to support any recruitment efforts to bring health care professionals here.

“Whether it’s being inclusive in introducing new families to offerings that are in our region, introducing them to schools and areas of recreation and culture and different things, we’re happy to be that concierge service and show them amenities and offerings that are available in the region.”

Clayton adds Grande Prairie still has a shortage of family doctors.

“Many people, including myself, don’t have a family doctor so that’s an area of focus I know.”

“We’re seeing good uptake in specialized physicians and the (Grande Prairie) Regional Hospital is a testament to, when you build something of (a) significant nature and of high technology, it in itself is an attraction tool.”

Clayton also told council in October that five new physicians had come to the Swan City.
