Forty-two-month jail sentence for one person charged in drug arrest

Alberta Justice says one of the people charged in a drug arrest in July of 2023 has been given a three-and-a-half-year jail sentence.

Kaitlen Mulek of Edmonton was handed the 42-month sentence January 15 in Grande Prairie court after pleading guilty to one count each of trafficking a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

She was one of several people charged after an investigation that started in the Fall of 2022.

Last July, Mounties did three searches in different parts of Grande Prairie.

RCMP said at the time they seized almost 1,600 grams of cocaine, close to 950 grams of fentanyl, over 3,100 grams of methamphetamine, and 87 cartons of illegal cigarettes.

One other person charged, John Medina, is due back in court February 14. Two others, Hananluiza Alshawabkeh and Faisel Huoseh, are due in court February 28.

Stay for second man charged after business break-and-enters

Alberta Justice says a stay of proceedings is in place for all charges against a man arrested after break and enters in Grande Prairie.

The stay for Allan Cloutier’s charges was put in place January 18 in Grande Prairie court.

The Grande Prairie man, along with Dakota Belcourt of Hythe, were arrested in June of 2023 in connection with break-ins that RCMP said at the time happened from late April to mid-May.

A search of a home had turned up evidence related to the break-ins.

Last November, Belcourt was given a 1,007-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to charges of break and enter to steal a firearm, theft over $5,000, mischief causing damage under $5,000 and two weapons charges.

He was given 276 days credit for time already spent in custody.

Trial dates set after fatal collision

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set a man charged after a fatal collision on Highway 35 near High Level in June of 2023.

The trial for Bradley Beaulieu of Yellowknife will take place September 24, 2024, in High Level.

The charges include operation of a motor vehicle causing death and bodily harm and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and bodily harm.

The charges were laid after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 35, ten kilometres north Highway 697 left a 33-year-old woman from Yellowknife dead and a man from Yellowknife with serious injuries. He was the driver of one vehicle, she was the passenger. He had tried to evade the crash.

Police say the other vehicle was travelling in the wrong lane, leading to the collision.

Jail sentence after Manning incident

Alberta Justice says an incident in Manning in July of 2023 has led to a three-month jail sentence for the man charged.

Kyser Steven Yasinski pleaded guilty to charges of theft over $5,000 and theft of a motor vehicle January 18 in Peace River court. He had originally been facing assault, mischief and dangerous driving counts as well.

Manning RCMP said at the time that on July 26 last year, they went to a home in Manning to arrest Yasinski, who was wanted on a charge of assault. He fled before being arrested but was taken in the next day.

Conditional sentence given in Peace River drug case

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a drug arrest in Peace River has been given an 18-month Conditional Sentence Order.

Mason McSween of Peace River was sentenced on a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking January 18 in Peace River court.

These sentences are served in the community under court-imposed conditions.

McSween was charged in July of 2022 after a search of a home in the County of Northern Lights.

The search turned up drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, and methamphetamine, along with cash and contraband cigarettes.

Six-month jail sentence for one accused after Grimshaw weapons, drug arrest

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a 2022 arrest in Grimshaw has been given a jail sentence.

Clifford Carifelle of Grimshaw was given six months in jail after being found guilty in July of last year of a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm, plus another 16 days after being found guilty of a charge of possession of a firearm.

Carifelle was one of three people arrested after a search of a Grimshaw home on October 21, 2022.

RCMP said at the time they recovered methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, edged weapons a semi-automatic rifle, and a taser.

Charges against the other two, Jordin Dwyer and Cheyanne Geissler, were withdrawn in June 2023.

In February of 2023, Carifelle was sentenced to 462-days time served after an incident where a motorcycle took off from an attempted traffic stop.

He and co-accused Danielle Buggins are also facing charges after being arrested in Falher last October.

RCMP said this came after a loaded firearm, other weapons and ammunition were found in a stolen truck.

A trial is scheduled for May 19 in Peace River.

Charges withdrawn against two accused facing drug, stolen property charges

Alberta Justice says charges against two people arrested after a bait vehicle operation last May have been withdrawn.

The charges against Gerald Lyons of Fairview were withdrawn January 30 in Peace River court while the charges against Madeline Pue of no fixed address were withdrawn January 31 in Fairview court.

Both were facing possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance counts, and both were set to stand trail the day the charges were withdrawn.

Peace Regional RCMP say the operation that led to the arrests started after reports of break and enters and property crimes from Woodland Cree First Nation.

Several ATVs were planted as bait vehicles that were later moved.

This led police to a search of a home in Fairview where the ATVs and methamphetamine were seized.

There is a stay of proceedings in place for charges against Joshua Lyons of Fairview.

Katelynn Freeland also of Fairview is scheduled to stand trial May 28.

Charges dismissed after Marten Lake incident

Alberta Justice says all charges against a man charged after September 2023 incident in Marten Lake have been dismissed.

The charges against Ray Travis Sawan were dismissed January 11 in Peace River court, the same day he was due to stand trial.

The charges had included assault, mischief, four of uttering threats and three more of failure to comply with a release order.

RCMP said at the time on September 17, 2023, they got a report of an unwanted man in Marten Lake home and other people were barricading themselves inside their homes.

Police were able to locate and arrest a suspect.

Restitution order for one accused after series of searches in Grimshaw

Alberta Justice says one of the people charged after a series of searches in Grimshaw has been ordered to pay restitution.

Tywon Larose of Grimshaw was told to pay $7,500 after a restitution hearing January 19 in Peace River court. In February of last year, Larose was given a sentence of time served in relation to a charge of break and enter, not a dwelling house.

Larose and a youth were charged after searches of a home and outbuilding November 23 and 24, 2021.

RCMP said at the time stolen firearms and $20,000 worth of stolen firefighting equipment were recovered.

Another search on December 1, 2021, of what Mounties called multiple locations, including two homes and a storage locker, turned up five more stolen firearms.

Eight people were taken in but only two were charged, both from Grimshaw.

Chad Richard was found not guilty after a trial in Peace River court.

Leanna Morgan was given a fine related to two charges of failure to comply with a release order.
