Curling, hockey from the weekend

The Aaron Sluchinski rink from Airdrie will represent Alberta at the Brier.

Sluchinski beat Kevin Koe 6-3 in the final played Sunday in Hinton.

Koe will still be going to the Brier as one of the wild card teams.

The two rinks from the Peace, Daylen Vavrek and Scott Webb, did not advance to the playoffs at provincials.

The Brier will be played March 1 to 10 in Regina.

The Brad Gushue rink, with Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker at lead, will be back as the defending champions.

The Catlin Schneider team, which includes Fort St. John’s Sterling Middleton and Dawson Creek’s Jason Ginter, will represent B.C.

The Storm split two home games over the weekend.

Bonnyville won 4-1 Saturday in Grande Prairie in front of an announced crowd of 1,412.

The Storm then won 3-2 over Drayton Valley Sunday.

Grande Prairie is now sixth in the AJHL standings with 46 points.

The Storm’s next game is Friday in Drayton Valley.

NWJHL

Fairview will take on Sexsmith in the play-in round in the Northwest Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Game 1 will go Monday in Sexsmith. Game 2 is set for Wednesday in Fairview, with Game 3, if needed, back in Sexsmith on Friday.

All games will start at 8 p.m.

The winner of that series moves on to play La Crete.

The other matchups in the next round include the Wheat Kings versus Peace River and Dawson Creek taking on Beaverlodge.

Fort St. John will have a bye.

NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League playoffs continue Monday with Dawson Creek in Fort St. John. The Canucks lead the series 1-0. Game 3 will be played Tuesday in Dawson Creek.

Also Tuesday, Grande Prairie in Spirit River. The series is tied 1-1 after the A’s won 6-2 in Spirit River Saturday. The Rangers won Game 1, 4-2 in Grande Prairie on Thursday.

Valleyview is in Manning Tuesday. That series is also tied 1-1 after the Comets won Game 1 at home 5-0 Friday. The Jets came back to win 3-2 at home Saturday.

All games start at 8:30 p.m.
