Provincial Budget

AMA head welcoming items in the new Alberta budget

Mar 4, 2024 | 3:00 PM

The president of the Alberta Medical Association says he is welcoming two things in the new provincial budget.

In a statement, Dr. Paul Parks says those include Minister of Health Adrianna LaGrange agreeing to a new funding model for paying family and rural physicians.

The second is the minister saying she would make sure Alberta can compete with is neighbours when it comes to getting and keeping health care professionals.

Parks goes on to say in a letter to members that La Grange can now go ahead on this work now that there is money in the budget.

He adds work needs to be done quickly to keep clinics going as “the urgency is still very real.”

The entire statement from Dr. Parks is as follows:

The health system remains under immense pressure. I am pleased that the Minister has made two commitments with Budget 2024 in response. First, she has agreed to implement a new funding model for the comprehensive, life-long care provided by family and rural physicians. Second, she will ensure that Alberta can compete with our neighbouring provinces when it comes to retaining and recruiting physicians and medical learners.

Budget 2024 also provides more funding for the additional services that physicians are providing to more Albertans as our population continues to grow. We will work with government to implement our AMA agreement.
