Peace River Women’s Shelter back to full operations next week

Mar 27, 2024 | 11:15 AM

Work is nearly complete at the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter after the discovery of black mould late last year while doing renovations to their facility.

The mould was uncovered during a small project involving windows and siding, which spiraled into extensive reclamation work to safely get rid of the toxic fungus.

The women’s shelter had to close and had a hefty price tag of $422,000 for the total cost of the reclamation project. Expenses were covered through multiple local businesses, the general public, and municipal government donations as well as a $400,000 lump some from the province.

During the four month closure of the shelter, reduced services were still available to women and children fleeing abuse off-site. The shelter’s support services arranged for those not in immediate danger to stay in local hotels and moved families that were ready for Second Stage accommodations into hotels as well. The 24-hour crisis line was also still up and running to direct callers to other emergency shelters.
