Bear Creek Reservoir will not fill in 2024, may not until 2026

More work is needed on the spillway in Muskoseepi Park.

That means the Bear Creek Reservoir will not fill this year and may not fill again until 2026.

The city’s Brian Glavin says an engineering inspection found something called armouring is needed.

“When we did our studies on the dam, there were numerous upgrades that were triggered by current regulations and one of the additional ones that was found was dam armouring.”

“Essentially what we need to do is add a type of rock to the face of the dam in order to stop erosion.”

Glavin says this will be done on the east side where the water comes down into Bear Creek, adding that this would mean more rocks on either side of the spillway.

Glavin says design work is being done this year.

“Next year, the plan would be to install the new armouring and likely, the reservoir wouldn’t be refilled until 2026.”

“It potentially could be done in 2025, but it all depends on how quickly the installation would occur.”

Glavin says how people would use that area would not change.

“it would change the look a little bit. You will see more rock on the east side of the dam, adjacent to the spillway where the earthen berm goes around and stops the water from going further south and east down into Muskoseepi Park into the creek.”

Glavin says there are no concerns right now as far as impacts on wildlife as the reservoir has not been filled for a few years now as other work was being done on the spillway.

That included removing vegetation that was impacting the dam and adding some new paths and benches.

He adds they have been in contact with Alberta Environment and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans about this work.
