Grande Prairie Police Service Chief Swearing-in Ceremony taking place in April

Apr 3, 2024 | 6:30 AM

A Swearing-in Ceremony for the new Grande Prairie Police Service Chief is set to take place later this month.

Dwayne Lakusta will be officially sworn into his new role on April 19, after first joining GP’s new police force in August of 2023.

Lakusta’s “extensive experience and commitment to public safety make him the ideal candidate to guide our law enforcement efforts,” according to Commission Chair Dan Wong.

Lakusta has spent nearly three decades in the law enforcement field, bringing a “wealth of knowledge to his new role.”

The Swearing-in Ceremony will also mark a significant point in Alberta’s history, as this will be the first Municipal Police Chief Swearing-in ceremony in almost seven decades, with the last one taking place in Camrose in 1956.

Multiple local and provincial dignitaries are invited to attend the event alongside residents. However, with limited seating, the event will also be streamed on the City’s social media to ensure the public has the “opportunity to celebrate this occasion.”

Any residents interested in attending can do so for free, and the City says an opportunity for residents to meet with Chief Lakusta, will be available following the ceremony.
