City facilities flags at half-mast for Vimy Ridge Day of Remembrance

Apr 9, 2024 | 11:11 AM

The City of Grande Prairie will be flying all City facility flags at half-mast today.

This is being done to honour, and remember Canadians who fought at the battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917, during the first world war.

In a post on social media, the City recognized the sacrifice of the some 3,600 Canadian Corps who lost their lives, and the 7,000 more wounded, who served in the battle.

In the same post, the City provided residents with some “perspective.”

“Just one week ago many enjoyed Easter celebrations from the comfort of our homes. in 1917, the assault on Vimy Ridge began at 5:30 a.m. on Easter Monday. A sobering thought as an image of soldiers marching to battle reminds us of the sorrowful distress inflicted upon many in times of war.”

The City added, “On this April 9, let us not forget the sacrifices made and the tremendous losses that occurred.”
