NDP Leadership Candidate Ganley pushing for debate in Grande Prairie, among other mid-size cities

Calgary-Mountain View’s NDP MLA, Kathleen Ganley is hoping for more debates to be held across the province during the “persuasion period” of her party’s leadership race.

Ganley has proposed there be more debates in mid-sized cities like Grande Prairie, Red Deer, and Medicine Hat. Currently, the debate schedule stops include Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge.

“This is a real opportunity to grow the party and we’ve seen a huge response from people in Alberta, and so I think we should take the opportunity to capitalize on that.”

Since the announcement of former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi throwing his name in the race for NDP leadership, the party membership doubled.

Ganley says party followers have been out supporting all different folks in the race.

“It just shows that Rachel Notley has built us something that can ultimately govern the province for the long term and I think we came very close in the last election, and the way we move that forward, there’s no magic to it, it’s just continuing to do the hard work of getting out and talking to people and telling them about our ideas.”

“One of the nice easy ways for people to have the opportunity to engage with that material is by having more debates.”

She says if debates do not pop-up in these mid-sized cities, there is always an option for an online one, being requested by many Albertans unable to attend in-person events.

“We’re hoping the party agrees to livestream those [planned debates] so that other people can engage to so at least there’s that opportunity, but there is so of nothing like being in the room.”

“I’m happy to come up [to Grande Prairie], we will be coming up, and be happy to take questions and that sort of thing.”

Ganley didn’t give a date of when she plans to be in Grande Prairie but says she will announce it and publish soon, but is hoping the leadership candidates agree to more debates.

She noted she’s excited regardless to talk to Albertan’s about the NDP’s perspective on the economy and “how we make sure it works for everyone.”
