Apr 23, 2024 | 5:54 PM

UPDATE: The area covered by the evacuation order has been updated.

An Alberta Emergency Alert says “Everyone in the area of Township Road 830, south to the Peace River, and from Highway 684, east to the Peace River, in the MD of Peace must evacuate immediately.”

Evacuees are asked to register at the Grimshaw Legion.

Everyone else in the MD of Peace, especially those close to the evacuation area, must be ready to leave on short notice.

Wildfire watchers in the Peace River Forest Area say the fire is out of control and an estimated 1,500 hectares in size. It is located seven kilometres southeast of Grimshaw and is headed towards the river.

A wildfire has led to an evacuation alert for part of the M.D. of Peace.

The alert includes everyone living within a five kilometre radius of the intersection of Township Road 830 and Range Road 231 and north of the Correctional Centre on Shaftsbury Trail.

The alert says the fire is located southeast of that intersection and heading northwest. The MD says it has burned 250 hectares.

People in the evacuation area are being told to gather pets, important documents and medication for at least three days.

Evacuees are being asked to register at the Grimshaw Legion, located at 5011 49 Avenue.

Anyone needing help can call the MD of Peace office at 780-338-3845.

The MD has declared a state of emergency. RCMP are there to coordinate evacuation efforts.

The MD of Peace is posting updates on its Facebook page.
