Wildfire hazard high in Grande Prairie, Peace River, High Level Forest Areas

The wildfire hazard in the Grande Prairie, Peace River and High Level Forest Areas is rated high.

A fire restriction is in place for the Grande Prairie and Peace River areas, a fire advisory for High Level.

Wildfire watchers in the Grande Prairie area say it has had 20 fires start since January 1. There are two listed as out of control, one has been turned over and the rest are out. Crews are still working on a 12 hectare fire in the DeBolt area.

The Sturgeon Lake Fire Department is doing some controlled burning to eliminate possible fuel for wildfires. So far, 43 acres of dead grass have been removed.

The Peace River area has seven active fires, including the Shaftesbury Fire that led to an evacuation order for part of the MD of Peace. Five of the seven are carryover fires from last year.

High Level has had 20 fires since January 1. Of those, 15 are out, three are being held, and two are under control.It also has 14 carryover fires that are under control or being held.
