Alberta’s Mid-Sized Mayor’s Caucus responds to “recent legislative developments”

Apr 29, 2024 | 12:10 PM

Alberta’s Mid-Sized Mayor’s Caucus has issued an official statement, regarding “open dialogue” with the provincial government.

Following the Conservative Party’s announcement about the proposed Bill 20 and Bill 18.

Bill 20, if passed in legislation, would see the provincial government gain more power over communities across Alberta, while Bill 18 if passed, would aim to lessen the grip of the federal government when it comes to research being done in Alberta.

The official statement from the Alberta’s Mid-Sized Mayor’s Caucus below:

As a member-based organization for 24 municipalities representing 28 provincial ridings and over one million Albertans, we have a tremendous responsibility to maintain an open dialogue with our provincially elected representatives. By communicating efficiently and accessibly with each other, we can better meet the opportunities and support the residents who trust us to govern responsibly.

Recently this has become more challenging. With many complex issues needing to be addressed, coupled with an increase in charged rhetoric and potentially landscape-altering legislation, specifically Bill 18 and 20, relationships are becoming more strained across all levels of government.

Yet, to manage the complex issues we all face, we need to see a heightened effort to remove barriers and foster more positive, transparent, open relationships across municipal and provincial partnerships. We firmly believe we need collaborative partners in the provincial government, namely those who can put their faith in locally elected officials to act in the best interest of Albertans.

To ensure that the spirit of collaboration is not lost, we ask that the Government of Alberta work with the Mid-Sized Cities Mayor’s Caucus (MCMC) to establish an open dialogue based on collaboration and partnership and the betterment of our communities and Albertans.

We look forward to continuing to advance the priorities of our membership over the coming weeks and months and continue discussions with the provincial government about how we can work together to improve our province.”

Twenty-four municipalities are represented by this Caucus, including Grande Prairie, with Mayor Jackie Clayton serving as a member.
