Two new EA courses coming to NWP

Apr 30, 2024 | 12:37 PM

Northwestern Polytechnic will be rolling out two new online certificates for Educational Assistants for the 2024/2025 school year.

An Educational Assistant certificate specializing in Literacy Supports will be offered at NWP in the fall, while an EA certificate for Inclusion Supports will be rolled out in the winter 2025 term.

The online certificates will take four months to complete, and will be hyper-focused; with the Literacy Supports program specializing in foundational literacy, and the Inclusion Supports course focusing on providing EAs with the skills to support students with exceptional needs.

In a release, NWP CEO Dr. Vanessa Sheane talked about the importance of EAs;

“Educational assistants are invaluable members of the multi-disciplinary teams in schools across the province, As classrooms strive for inclusive education, the need for qualified EA staff has grown exponentially. NWP is doing our part to deliver timely workforce solutions.”

According to NWP, the courses have been designed with “convenience and flexibility in mind,” so students can easily work towards their certificate while continuing their employment or day-to-day commitments.

Currently, NWP does offer a twelve-month EA certificate program, however, these new additions will allow students to prioritize specific skills while still earning their certificate.

The students who do complete both of the new courses can then apply it to NWP’s full-year Educational Assistant program.
