May 11, 2024 | 10:41 AM

The County of Grande Prairie has provided an update on the ongoing wildfire situation.

The County says progress was made overnight when it comes to containing the 900-hectare wildfire, four kilometres east of Teepee Creek. Crews have established a perminter on approximately 40 per cent of the blaze.

At this time there has been no damage to any structures and the three homes in the affected area have been structurally protected.

County Fire and Alberta Wildfire crews will continue to respond to this fire.

A special air quality statement has also been issued by Environment Canada due to the smoke, and the County provided a list of tips to keep the air inside your home clean:

  • Close doors and windows to keep smoke out
  • Close fresh air intakes from furnace, fireplaces, or stoves
  • Turn on your air conditioning if you have it and set it to recirculate.
  • Use humidifiers

A local state of emergency is still in effect.

Evacuation Order:

An evacuation order is in effect for anyone living in the Kleskun Creek north to Township Road 742 area, and Riverstone Golf Course.

All evacuees are asked to travel north to Township Road 742 and west onto Highway 733, and register at the Pomeroy Hotel in Grande Prairie.

The County says to bring all pets, important documents foods, medication and water to be away from your home for at least seven days.

Evacuation Alert:

An evacuation alert has been issued for any residents residing in the area of Township Road 750 to Township Road 730, Range Road 32 and Smoky River, due to the Teepee Creek wildfire.

The blaze is now four kilometres east of Teepee Creek and any residents in the affected areas are asked to fuel their vehicles, gather important personal belongings and pets, and prepare for possible evacuation.
