County reminds residents “Unauthorized Re-entry Endangers Emergency Response”

May 11, 2024 | 6:26 PM

The County of Grande Prairie is reminding all evacuated residents that unauthorized re-entry endangers not only yourself but emergency responders as well.

Currently, the County is under a local state of emergency and all evacuation orders and alerts are being enforced under the Emergency Management Act.

An evacuation order remains in effect for anyone living in the Kleskun Creek north to Township Road 742 area, and Riverstone Golf Course.

For any evacuees, returning home is strictly prohibited until municipal authorities deem the area safe. According to the County, “Re-entering the evacuation zone compromises the integrity of our volunteer Search and Rescue teams and Emergency Response personnel operations.”

At this time a secure perimeter is established around the evacuation area, and any “evacuees requiring temporary access to their property can call 1-825-606-5166 to determine if their need for re-entry is legitimate and whether it is safe to do so given the current wildfire status.”

Anyone wanting to stay up to date with the current wildfire situation, visit Alberta Wildfire’s website.

The County provided an update on the Teepee Creek wildfire earlier, classifying it as out of control at a size of 1,382 hectares.

Crews are working to build a fireguard and they expect the spread rates of the blaze to be significantly lower due to the lack of winds.

Another update is expected at 9 p.m.
