Alberta RCMP prepared to protect properties during wildfire season

May 16, 2024 | 1:12 PM

While last year’s wildfire season had no credible reports of looting and below average break and enter instances, the Alberta RCMP says they will employ a number of strategies to make sure communities and properties evacuated due to wildfires are protected.

Mounties will be doing perimeter controls by maintaining tight access in and out of evacuated areas to prevent anyone who might be trying to do unlawful activities.

They will also be doing roving patrols with a secured perimeter. Marked police cars will move throughout communities looking for signs of criminal activity and be on the lookout for individuals that are not authorized to be in an evacuated zone. Drones with advanced optical and night vision technology will also be used to pinpoint suspicious activity.

Special Tactical Operations and Emergency Response Teams will be in place to react to any incidents. These teams are specially trained to deal with the most sensitive and dangerous situations.

Investigators with high experience will examine reports of suspicious activity and individuals and conduct targeted investigations of offenders with high priority. They are also to actively suppress crime through the use of covert and overt techniques and arrest people trying to take advantage of evacuated areas.

Crime reduction strategies and equipment are also to be implemented within and around evacuated places. RCMP will be placing “bait” vehicles and equipment to catch offenders in the act.

In the event of an evacuation, local officers will be committed to keeping communities safe and secure. Alberta RCMP have released videos outlining basic advice on how to keep your property safe in case of emergencies like evacuation, to be less of a target to thieves.
