Fire Restriction

City & County of Grande Prairie lower fire bans to a restriction

May 17, 2024 | 12:35 PM

The City and County of Grande Prairie have both reduced their Fire Bans to Fire Restrictions.

Both credited the recent rainfall for this, but do remind residents that fire dangers remain high across the Peace region.

In a release, a guideline to the new fire restriction was provided:

Prohibited –

  • All outdoor fires not contained within a non-combustible fire pit.
  • Wood campfires in backcountry or random camping areas.
  • Fireworks and exploding targets

Allowed –

  • Safe wood campfires within fire rings in public and private campgrounds.
  • Backyard fire pits and burn barrels on private land.
  • BBQs and smokers that use solid fuels (wood chips or pellets, charcoal briquettes, etc.)
  • Propane, natural gas or electrically powered cooking, heating and lighting appliances.
  • Open flame oil devices (turkey deep fryers or tiki torches).
  • Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor.

Both the county and city say these restrictions will now be in place until conditions improve, and remind residents to never burn when winds reach, or are forecasted to be, 12 kilometres per hour or more.

The county is also encouraging residents to once again check all winter burn piles for any evidence of a holdover fire.

Residents are asked to always use the soak, stir, soak again method when extinguishing a fire, and to call 310-FIRE or 911 if they do see a wildfire.

This Fire Restriction will remain in place until conditions improve.
