Seeding progress in the Peace well ahead of five-year average says new crop report from AFSC

May 22, 2024 | 1:25 PM

The newest crop report from AFSC, dated May 14, says just under 41 per cent of the crop in the Peace had been seeded as of that date.

That compares to 18.3 per cent as of May 7.

The five year average for the same time if year is 17.3 per cent.

The breakdown of seeding progress by crop is 53.6 per cent for spring wheat, 45.6 for peas, 35.9 for canola, 29 for barley, and 27.6 per cent for oats.

Sub-surface moisture is rated 64 per cent good, 27 per cent fair, 5 per cent poor and 4 per cent excellent.

AFSC says all regions except the Peace had improved surface soil moisture, but the report was compiled before the recent rain in our area.

Environment Canada’s Daily Data Report says Grande Prairie had 13.2 millimetres of rain, or just over half an inch, from May 16-19.

The report also says that tame hay is 50 per cent fair, 31 per cent good, and 19 per cent poor, while 31 per cent of pasture was rated good to excellent.

Seeding progress across Alberta as of May 14 was 32.5 per cent.
