Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow set for June 21-23

Jun 7, 2024 | 2:10 PM

The Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow is set for June 21-23.

Spokesperson Wendy Goulet says this is an opportunity for non-Indigenous people to learn about and appreciate Indigenous culture.

“It helps bridge cultural gaps, reduces misconceptions, and fosters respect for our rich heritage.”

Goulet says this will be a free event and everyone can come.

“It gives people hands-on learning, land-based learning for educational experiences and helps us to promote cultural sensitivity and inclusivity.”

“(It will also) help people (that) attend expand their perceptions (and) enjoy our culture.”

The weekend will include entertainment on the rink side, an Indigenous market on the Bowes side, and food trucks outside.

Goulet adds they will have a Treaty 8 display set up during the Pow Wow, as this year marks the 125th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 8.

“That’s very significant for the signing of Treaty 8, so we wanted to highlight that and bring some awareness towards it.”

“We are all Treaty 8 people (and) hosting this event right on the 125th anniversary just brings that opportunity to share education about the treaty.”

A delegation from the Pow Wow Planning Committee went before city council at Monday’s meeting to ask for a $60,000 sponsorship from city hall. Council instead voted in favour of a $22,000 gift in kind. This is for the use of the Bonnetts Energy Centre.
