NWP adds two new diploma programs for fall semester

Jun 12, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Two new diplomas specializing in University Arts and Biological Sciences will be offered to Northwestern Polytechnic students in the fall.

Through the School of Applied Science and Technology; students will have the option of pursuing a two-year diploma in either arts or bio sciences locally, “or carry-on through NWP’s existing collaborative University Transfer (UT) program as they work towards an undergraduate degree,” according to Dr. Terry Kowalchuk, NWP Provost and Vice-President Academic.

Dr Brian Redmond, Interim Dean for the School of Applied Science and Technology, added NWP’s biological sciences diplomas do provide an “extremely versatile” path to competitive pre-professional programs in healthcare and science careers. Students who choose to take the art program can use it as a “stepping stone for success;” focusing on social, sciences, and humanities including English and psychology.

Dr. Redmond added, “these programs are ideally timed for students that want to study University Arts and University Science close to home.”

For these new diplomas, the fields of study will remain the same as other universities or polytechnics that offer them, as the only major change is the ability to fulfill this credential without leaving the region, or NWP.

Anyone interested in registering for either of these programs can do so by visiting NWP’s website.

Currently, NWP is the only post-secondary in the Peace region offering these types of diploma programs.

Since transitioning from the Grande Prairie Regional College to Northwestern Polytechnic, there has been a growing community movement for more art and music programs at the school.

Since June 1, NWP has signed a ten-year agreement with Grande Prairie Live Theatre, and announced this arts program.
