Zama City wildfire expected to grow

Jun 26, 2024 | 12:35 PM

An out-of-control wildfire outside the community of Zama City in northwestern Alberta is estimated to be 3,200 hectares in size. The wildfire started on June 20 and is about 8.5 km southwest of Zama City.

Mackenzie County has placed an evacuation notice on that community and it remains in effect.

The fire is expected to grow and Alberta Wildfire has responded to the blaze with 185 firefighting personnel, along with nine helicopters for heli-bucketing, and heavy equipment operators.

More resources are expected today (Wednesday, June 26).

Air tankers and heavy aircraft remain on standby for the wildfire and structural protection in key areas remains in place and ready to go, if it is required.

Alberta Wildfire said in an update on Tuesday evening that two dozer groups were expected to completely secure a perimeter line on the north, west and south of the fire. Fire crews have been holding flanks in the northeast and southeast areas.

The wildfire danger rating in the High Level Forest Area is Very High, and no precipitation is forecasted for Wednesday or Thursday, but rather hot, windy weather. A fire advisory was put into effect of the HLFA on Tuesday.
