County of Grande Prairie reminds residents to follow Bearsmart guidelines

Jun 28, 2024 | 1:03 PM

The County of Grande Prairie reminds those who visit the Evergreen Ridge Recreation area and surrounding Crown Land, to always be aware of bears.

Bears frequent these areas, so the County has provided a list of Bearsmart tips:

  • Make noise: A loud shout every few minutes is more effective than bear bells.
  • Carry bear spray: Keep it in a belt or chest holster and ensure you know how to use it.
  • Travel in groups: Keep children in between the adults. Don’t let anyone fall behind or run ahead.
  • Keep your dogs on leash: Or consider leaving them at home as dogs can escalate bear encounters.

The County also suggested that anyone heading into these areas, review the Bearsmart guidelines beforehand.
