Wildfire danger rating at Very High for Grande Prairie Forest Area and Extreme for High level Forest Area

Jul 7, 2024 | 6:08 PM

The wildfire hazard rating is once again Very High for the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Alberta Wildfire says daytime highs will near 30 degrees Celsius with overnight lows nearing 14 degrees.

Winds are expected to be 15-20 kilometers per hour and gusty at times.

Crossover conditions are expected, when the relative humidity is lower than the temperature and a wildfire can still start easily and spread quickly.

All fires started in 2024 are currently extinguished and the one remining carryover fire from 2023 is listed as under control, while smoke from the northern areas of the province and BC are being pushed into the Grande Prairie area.

There are currently no fire restrictions in place for the Grande Prairie Forest Area, but residents will need a permit before conducting any burns.

Meanwhile the hazard rating for the High level Forest Area is now Extreme.

A fire restriction is in effect for the area.

Under this fire restriction, existing fire permits are now suspended and no new permits will be issued, however, safe wood campfires inside a fire ring in a campground, are still allowed.
