Grande Prairie City Council meeting highlights

Jul 16, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie city council met on Monday. Highlights form the meeting included the following:

Upgrades in Muskoseepi

Council has agreed to refer upgrades at the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion and Borstad Hill to fall budget talks.

This idea had come up during a discussion with organizers of the Bear Creek Folk Festival in March.

Ideas being looked at include adding electricity at Borstad Hill and the city buying things like tents, stages and fencing that could be rented out to community events.

City Census

City administration told council that the 90 per cent response threshold had been met for the city census.

Anyone who still might want to take part can call city hall at 311.

Results are expected back before council after the summer break in early August.

Transit Bylaw Changes

Council approved some housekeeping changes for the transit bylaw.

This included adding vaping to the list of things people are not allowed to do on city buses.

Youth Advisory Council

Council also heard an annual report from its Youth Advisory Council.

The council has some recommendations for city hall, including hosting a Youth Career Discovery Expo in 2025 and beyond.

The council says among the things done during its term was:

  • Seeing membership increase to 16,
  • Doing more equity, diversity and inclusion training
  • Having ten delegations attend its meeting and going to more events
    • Those delegations included the Grande Prairie Police Service and groups talking about cell tower placement and food security

The group regularly met with council to share ideas.

Sixteen members was the biggest number the council has ever had.

Bylaw changes this year allow up to 18 members.

Council’s next meeting will be held on July 29.
