Witness testimony finished for two men charged after Coutts blockade

Jul 24, 2024 | 6:52 PM

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The final witnesses have been heard at the trial of two men accused of conspiring to murder police at the 2022 blockade at Coutts.

During cross-examination Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Steven Johnston accused Chris Carbert of planning to use Coutts as a launchpad to start a revolution.

He also accused Carbert and his colleagues of being prepared to use violence to repel the R-C-M-P if law enforcement tried to end the two-week blockade over COVID-19 mandates.

Carbert has said there was no plan to do violence and that the only way he would fight is if someone tried to give him a COVID-vaccine shot.

Carbert and Anthony Olienick were arrested after a stockpile of guns and body armour was discovered in a trailer in Coutts in February 2022.

Carbert and Olienick are also charged with mischief and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose while Olienick faces a further charge of possessing a pipe bomb.

Final arguments and the charge to the jury are scheduled for next week.
