County Council highlights from August 12

Aug 13, 2024 | 11:51 AM

The County of Grande Prairie Council met on Monday August 12, 2024. Agenda items included the following:

Landfill and Transfer Station discussions

County Council approved having the West County Regional Landfill continue to operate as a transfer station. This has been happening since December 2023, when the landfill changed its operations temporarily due to lower-than-expected cell capacity. A cell is a single waste storage unit within the entire landfill.

The landfill will continue with operating as they have over the past nine months with temporary capping of the existing cell due to limited capacity, while the County investigates a long-term solution for the issue.

Council also approved the decision to reallocate just shy of $100,000 from the Clairmont Regional Landfill Call 4 Construction project to a Tarp Shed Replacement project at the Clairmont Landfill to cover additional costs.

Extended hours for County building

Starting September 3, 2024, the County’s Administration, Transportation and Utilities, and the Community Services Building will now be open over the lunch hour. Hours of operation at both buildings will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. effective that date.

Reimbursement for Town of Wembley

Nearly $382,000 was approved by County Council to be reimbursed to the Town of Wembley for road upgrades made on Township Road 712 between Range Road 82 and Range Road 83.

Reallocation of funds

  • $62,500 of $169,625 towards Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park will be reallocated towards the site’s 2023/24 operational deficit instead of 2024 capital funding.
  • $225,000 is being reallocated from budget to address “outstanding and emergent repairs necessary to maintain County water and sewer systems.”

Replacement County vehicles

Council approved getting three new replacement all-terrain vehicles. There will be two replaced quads with two six-wheeled all-terrain vehicles at $38,600 altogether, and replacing one quad for $12,000.
