Harvest starts early in Peace Region, according to latest crop report

The Peace is slowly catching up to the southern portion of the province with harvesting winter and fall cereal crops.

In the Peace Region, winter wheat and dry pea harvest are 25 and 18 per cent complete, respectively. Canola is also starting to be swathed.

According to the latest Alberta Crop Report released on August 16, provincially all crop harvest is 3.2 per cent complete.

This means harvest is starting early across Alberta, especially in the Peace.

The 5-year average is 2.4 per cent and 10-year average 2.2 per cent for the entire province. For the Peace, it is 0.1 per cent for the 5-year average and 0.2 per cent for the 10-year average.

Crop conditions are also staying good to excellent for the better portion in the Peace, at 54 per cent. This is the second-highest ratio rating in the province following the South.

Dryland yield estimations (bushels/acre) for the Peace are:

  • 46.7 for Spring Wheat
  • 55.6 for Barley
  • 59.2 for Oats
  • 33.8 for Canola
  • 39.7 for Dry Peas

Estimations for the Peace are lower than the provincial estimates, with Spring Wheat at 47.2, Barley at 60.0, Oats at 69.9, Canola at 34.2, and Dry Peas at 37.8.

But good news,mtame hay conditions declined across the province, but the Peace Region persists to have the best! It is 8.4 per cent poor, 34.1 per cent fair, 50.3 per cent good, and 7.2 per cent excellent in this portion of the province.

The rest of Alberta’s averages are at; 37.3 per cent poor, 33.3 per cent fair, 27.9 per cent good, and 1.5 per cent excellent for tame hay.
