County of Grande Prairie Council transferring Ron Pfau Memorial Scholarship to Northwestern Alberta Foundation

County of Grande Prairie Council is transferring the management and administration of the Ron Pfau Memorial Scholarship.

At their Thursday regular meeting, council approved the transfer of the current fund balance to the Northwestern Alberta Foundation.

County Reeve Bob Marshall says NAF will be able to better mange the fund.

“It gives students a one-stop-shop instead of trying to hunt around and find what else is available out there,” Marshall says. “[NAF has] done a very good job at managing all of the other funds, it just makes sense to us to have one organization look after it all.”

Additionally, council directed administration to include additional amounts in the fund to raise the total funds.

Marshall says they aim to create a $1,000 scholarship for future recipients.

“When it was originally brought in $500 back then vs. what $500 gets you now with inflation, it

S not the same,” he says. “So, let’s make it $1,000 and also let’s contribute extra to it ongoing, until it gets to the point where it’s self-sustaining.”

He says there is currently $11,866 in the fund balance.

“We want to make sure it’s relevant to today’s standards and what the kids need,” he says. “And again, just to make sure we get to the point where it’s self-sustaining hopefully. Then we can just let the foundation look after it and carry it forward.”

Council also directed administration to include additional amounts in the fund to generate an award in the amount of $1,000 for future recipients.

The increased funds will be further discussed by council during budget deliberations.
