Storm season opener, rugby championship games, Wolves running and soccer, bantam football, slo pitch, Try-It Day on local sports schedule this weekend

Storm

The Storm start the regular season Friday with a home game against Whitecourt. Face-off at 7:00 p.m. at the Bonnetts Energy Centre.

A fan festival will take place from 4:30 to 6:30.

The Storm finished sixth overall in the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs before losing in the first round of the playoffs in six games to the Calgary Canucks.

The Canucks went on to sweep the Wolverines in four games in the AJHL final.

The Storm will make a return visit to Whitecourt against the Wolverines Saturday. That game will start at 7:00 p.m.

NWJHL

There is one Northwest Junior Hockey League exhibition game Friday.

Dawson Creek in Beaverlodge will start at 7:30.

Saturday, Fairview in Sexsmith starts at 7:30, Dawson Creek in Peace River will start at 8:00.

Thursday night, Peace River won 6-2 in Fairview.

The regular season starts September 20.

Rugby

The Grande Prairie Sirens host St. Albert in the Edmonton Rugby Union Division 2 Reinbold Cup final Saturday. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at Macklin Field.

The Centaurs are in Edmonton Saturday to play the Clansmen in the Division 3 final.

That game will start at 12:15.

The provincial final for Division 3 will take place September 21 in St. Albert.

Wolves

Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves cross country running will host ACAC Grand Prix #2 Saturday at the Wapiti Nordic Centre trails.

The women’s race will start at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men’s race at 2:00 p.m.

Soccer visits Keyano College Saturday and Sunday.

Game times will be 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday at noon and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, starting with the women’s game both days.

Bantam Football

There a three bantam football games scheduled for Saturday.

The Norseman versus the Broncos will start at 10:00 a.m.

That will be followed by the Raiders and the Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m.

Both games will be played at CKC Field.

Also Saturday, Sexsmith in High Prairie starts at 3:00 p.m.

Slo Pitch

Grimshaw Slo Pitch will host the 2024 Harvest Moon Tournament Friday through Sunday.

Games start Friday at 6:00 p.m.

There is a home run derby after the last games on Saturday.

Try-It Day

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection will host Try-It Day Saturday.

People can try various sports, dance and art activities at no cost.

There are close to 40 different options to chose from.
