Slave Lake RCMP creates their own Crime Reduction Unit
Mounties in Slave Lake have permanently shifted resources and moved several members’ roles into new ones to focus on reducing crime.
RCMP have noticed an uptick in complex criminal activity in the region in recent years and the General Investigative Section decided in June to create a new Crime Reduction Unit with reallocated members of their team.
This team will be using proactive strategies, data-driven policing, and community collaboration to reduce crime in, and around Slave Lake, and enhance the safety of the public. CRU’s differ from GIS’, as they use proactive approaches to target high-risk priority offenders, conduct surveillance of targets, and do warrant round-ups.
In small communities like Slave Lake, there are usually groups of offenders that are frequently responsible for a large amount of crimes that take place. While crime rates are fairly low in the area, not changing drastically over the past few years, RCMP CRU will aim to reduce the rate of crime more but targeting repeat offenders causing the most harm.
