200 speeding tickets handed out in Grande Prairie school zones in first two weeks of September

Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is again reminding drivers to watch their speed in school zones.

Enforcement Services says it handed out 200 tickets for speeding in school zones in the first two weeks of September.

The 30 km/h speed limit is in place every school day from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The speed limit in playground zones is 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset.

“We hope that as drivers get used to school zones being back in effect as of September 3rd, that we will see fewer offences in school zones. The safety of children in our community is of the utmost importance and we urge drivers to use extra caution when near schools and playgrounds,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman in a release from Enforcement Services.

There were also nine tickets given out for parking violations in the first two weeks of September, plus another 31 verbal warnings.

Enforcement Services say those violations included parking within five metres of a crosswalk or intersection, parking in no parking or no stopping areas, parking on a sidewalk; and parking on the wrong side of the street.

Officials also want to remind drivers that it is illegal to pass another vehicle going in the same direction in a school or playground zone.
