Folktales Tour putting out a call for volunteers

Oct 4, 2024 | 2:41 PM

The annual Folktales Tour at the Grande Prairie Museum’s Heritage Village is putting out a call for readers and volunteers.

Put on by the City of Grande Prairie, with help from Generations Reader’s Theatre; this event is designed to get people into the Halloween mood while sharing historical local stories.

This year’s folktales tour will feature a fresh set of stories from the South Peace Regional Archives and the Disturbing the Peace Podcast, including one about Archie Harvey, a former local RCMP member who died in the line of duty in 1967.

Theatre organizer Bethe Goldie said for anyone who hasn’t gone to or taken part in the Folktales tour before, it’s a lot more than just reading a story.

“Sometimes there’s a flickering light, a shadow, or someone walks past a window and it’s just really exciting. It’s never a boring time.”

Goldie says if anyone is not sure about being a reader, but would like to help, sign up anyway, as there are multiple jobs that need to be done over the course of the two days.

“It’s a lot of fun. Our group is wonderful, and our attitude with everybody in our group is that you contribute what you feel you want to and we don’t want to push anybody to do anything that they’re not wanting to do. So, if you know you want to be a reader only, great. If you want to help with organizing things, great.”

Goldie says if you have attended the Folktales tour in the past, and really enjoyed it, you should consider becoming a reader.

“Being in those buildings in Heritage Village, that in itself is amazing, because the old things there and the settings are kind of perfect for the stories were reading.”

She added it can also be a very rewarding experience.

“It’s a lot of fun to be reading and connecting with your audience, and just getting people interested in the experience. We always feel so accomplished after we finish.”

Anyone interested in helping to volunteer with the Folktales Tour, can email programming@cityofgp.com, or generationsreaderstheatregp@gmail.com.

For anyone interested in attending the Folktales Tour at Heritage Village, it will run on Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25 per person and are available online.

The city does ask residents to dress for the weather as it is a mostly outdoor event.
