Covered sports facility location to be decided by the end of the year

City Hall says a location for a soccer dome will be picked by the end of this year.

A soccer player/parent came to Monday’s city council meeting to ask about progress on this idea.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says the $10 million needed for “a covered recreation space” has already been approved.

“Currently, there are multiple opportunities in locations and we’re waiting for some more information in regards to those additional costs, other than the asset itself. The dome is still approved. The location has yet to be determined.”

Clayton adds city staff are looking at some other potential costs.

“Council directed administration to go away, get some engineering and (servicing) costs, bring it back for consideration. That discussion will come back here for fall budget deliberations, but we will make a decision on the location by the end of the year.”

City staff were to go to the public last fall about two locations, one on either side of the pickleball courts by Legion Field, for a new facility. In May, the one located north of the pickleball area was endorsed as a possible location by a 6-3 vote at council.

Clayton says the area where the old Comp high school was located, now has new turf and it will also be used for various sports.
