Charge laid in drowning death of 5-year-old on Wabamun Lake

Nov 15, 2024 | 12:12 PM

Parkland RCMP have laid a charge in relation to a drowning that happened on Wabamun Lake earlier this fall.

It was Oct. 13 when RCMP responded to the lake in Wabamun Provincial Park, west of Edmonton.

It was initially said by RCMP that it appeared a canoe had capsized, leading to the tragic death of a five-year-old girl.

Days later, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over, saying it was now a criminal investigation.

On Nov. 15, RCMP say they have charged 35-year-old Edmonton resident, Mary Quinn, with failure to provide the necessities of life.

Quinn has since gone before a judge and been remanded into custody. She is scheduled to appear again Nov. 20 via CCTV in a Stony Plain courtroom.

The child’s identity has not been released.
