Farm group backing proposed amendments to trade bill

Nov 21, 2024 | 1:57 PM

The Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance says it approves of a proposed Senate amendment to a piece of trade legislation.

Bill C-282 is meant to protect supply-managed sectors in future trade negotiations by barring any raising of quotas or lowering of tariffs for these industries.

The alliance says in a release that it supports a proposed amendment from a senate committee that would mean these rules would not apply to existing agreements or those under negotiation.

The release also says 90 per cent farmers depend on trade to sell what they produce.

“CAFTA has repeatedly called on the Senate to reject C-282, which poses a direct threat to Canada’s agri-food sector, our trade relationships and the thousands of farmers and their families that rely on open access to global markets to make a living. The Senate Committee has recognized the threat to our sector by recommending an amendment that protects our core interests in the North American and other key trading relationships,” says alliance president Greg Northey in that same release

The bill remains under consideration at the Senate’s committee level.
