Hockey, curling for Thursday, December 12

NPHL

There are three games in the North Peace Hockey League Thursday night.

Grande Prairie will be in Dawson Creek, High Prairie in Falher and Spirit River in Fort St. John.

All three games start at 8:30 p.m.

World Junior A Challenge

The round-robin concludes Thursday at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Camrose.

Canada West plays Sweden Thursday night. Canada West is 0-2, while Sweden is 2-0.

Matthew Gillard and Max Algajer from the Storm are with Canada West.

Thursday afternoon, Canada East plays the U.S. Both are 1-1.

The semi-finals will be played on Saturday, with the medal games on Sunday.

Curling

UPDATE: Skrlik is now 2-0 after beating Lawes 6-4. Skrlik’s next game will be an A Event qualifier on Friday.

Some of the top curling teams have gathered in Swift Current, Saskatchewan for the Western Showdown.

Play got underway Thursday, December 12.

Kayla Skrlik won her opener, 8-4 in seven ends over Saskatoon’s Ashley Thevenot. Skrlik’s team scored four in the third end after falling behind 2-0 early, then stole one in the fourth end and a deuce in five.

Skrlik is playing Kaitlyn Lawes Thursday afternoon.

On the men’s side, the Brad Gushue rink with Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker at lead, Kevin Koe’s team, and the Evan Van Amsterdam foursome, which also includes Jason Ginter and Sterling Middleton, all start play on Friday.

Van Amsterdam faces the Charley Thomas rink based in Saskatoon in the morning draw Friday at 7 a.m. Alberta time

Koe plays John Epping in the afternoon draw.

Gushue will play an as-yet-undetermined opponent in the afternoon.

That afternoon draw starts Friday at 1:30 Alberta time.
