Alberta housing starts on the rise

Dec 16, 2024 | 10:30 PM

Alberta housing construction is ending 2024 on a positive note.

The province led Canada in housing starts per capita from January to November; and saw a 35 per cent increase compared to 2023, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. (CMHC)

The Alberta government says they see the need for more housing and will continue to “support builders and encourage new residential housing construction by cutting red tape, incentivizing housing construction, and supporting innovative strategies.”

Minister of Senior’s, Community, and Social Services Jason Nixon added that they will “continue to support our partners to get homes built faster.”

Last month, the province launched the Stop Housing Delays online portal, which is designed to reduce barriers and “get more shovels in the ground.”

The Stop Housing Delays initiative was designed for developers and municipal authorities, identifying areas that prevent fast and efficient construction, while highlighting common barriers faced by developers for the Alberta government to address.

Between January and November, Edmonton saw the largest increase in housing starts province-wide with 16,939, compared with 11,427 in 2023.
